“What we’re going to do now is put these two cases together. Are you in?” Weber looked out over the group to gauge their reaction.
“You’ve heard Zaid al-Asadi’s account. And I’m certain Ghaalib’s weak point is that he’s partly driven by his personal desire for revenge. But we mustn’t be in any doubt that what he has started could also result in an act of terrorism if we don’t stop it in time. The conversation on the video, which I’ve had translated for our Danish colleagues, is about an act of violence that will cost the lives of many, many people. We don’t know when or even how, so that’s what we’re working hard to establish.”
He turned around to face Assad. “Zaid here is our sitting duck. I’ve informed the Danish police that Detective Inspector Carl Mørck and Hafez el-Assad, as Zaid calls himself officially, are now part of the investigation team.”
Carl nodded to his new colleagues. In front of him, Assad was sitting silently. Carl worried what the words sitting duck might involve, but that was what Assad had decided. He would step out of the shadows and confront Ghaalib directly. “Anything to save my wife, Marwa, and my daughter Nella,” he had said in front of the whole group.
“We have to assume that there will be an act of terrorism very soon,” Weber continued. “So it’s of the utmost importance that we quickly find the people who kidnapped Joan Aiguader, and preferably before we make it public that Zaid al-Asadi has received Ghaalib’s message.”
Carl stretched out his hand and placed it on Assad’s shoulder, and Assad turned and nodded.
His eyes were expressionless.
